Yoga Nidra Meditation & Relaxation
Yoga Nidra is not what many of us consider a "yoga" practice. Its not about twisting the body into various postures and its not a fitness class. Yoga Nidra is a form of meditation but it does not require you to sit in meditation, on a cushion, with a straight back and aching hips whilst you try to control the thought waves in your mind!!
So what then is this powerfully transformative and deeply calming form of yoga?
If you can lie on the floor or relax in a chair you can do Yoga Nidra. Some gentle stretching may be involved.
There is no effort required in the practice of Yoga Nidra. You are invited to be as comfortable as you possibly can be with blankets, cushions and pillows, get snug, close your eyes and listen to the guidance.
You let go of thinking and judging yourself, you may relax so much that you fall asleep and this is ok too.
The idea is to relearn how to do nothing, think nothing and just "be" whilst your body and mind rest, restore and rejuvenate, effortlessly.
So how could something so simple be so transformational i hear you ask?
In Yoga Nidra most people experience a depth of calm and relaxation that goes beyond anything a routine sleep or formal sitting meditation can achieve in a relatively short time. Your mind goes into what is the deepest and most restorative brain wave state called delta, which you may have heard of.
In the delta state its like a deeply relaxing and healing sleep where 45 minutes of Yoga Nidra is said to be the equivalent of 3 - 4 hours deep sleep.
Yoga Nidra is an ancient sleep based meditation technique that has the power to take you to the innermost, deepest levels of relaxation where your whole body and being is permeated by peace of mind and profound stillness.
Yoga Nidra is very effective for addressing common stress - related health issues, and self - destructive behaviour patterns.
Yoga Nidra reverses the chronic fight or flight state that most of us are living in, thereby reversing stress related illnesses at their root.
Studies show that those who practice Yoga Nidra experience more sleep cycles at night indicating more restorative sleep. Many people have reported after a Yoga Nidra class that they had the "best nights sleep ever".
Body, breath and awareness techniques designed to remove mental and emotional disturbance drop you effortlessly into a profound state of restful awareness. This activates self - healing and self - balancing as the body awakens and vital energy flows freely, regenerating the body and restoring balance to the mind and emotions.
As stress - producing conflicts fade away, inner harmony grows.....such is the power of deep REST with Yoga Nidra.
